Sony Rolls Out Compact PlayStation 5 Models Just in Time for Holidays
Sony recently revealed its revamped PlayStation 5 models. These new PS5 models come three years after the original launch. The focus this time is mainly on design and size.
New Dimensions and Weight
The 2023 PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Digital Edition are notably smaller. Sony states that the PS5 volume is down by 30%. Additionally, the weight has dropped by 18% and 24% for each model, respectively.

Panel and Color Updates
Sony has revamped the removable panels. Now, there are four parts instead of two. The top halves are glossy, while the bottom halves are matte. As for colors, Sony sticks to white. However, new colors like Black, Volcanic Red, Cobalt Blue, and Sterling Silver will arrive in 2024. Each will cost $55.
New Features
One panel now opens to reveal a new Ultra HD Blu-ray drive for PS5 slim. Interestingly, this drive is removable. You can even buy it separately for $80. But remember, it’s only compatible with the new PlayStation 5 models.
Stand and Storage
The console comes with a new stand. Yet, this stand only supports horizontal placement. For vertical placement, you’ll need a separate $30 stand. Internally, the storage gets a bump. The PS5 slim now offers a full 1TB, up from the previous 825GB.
Pricing and Availability
Lastly, the standard model still costs $500. However, the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition now costs $450, a $50 increase. These new models will hit the U.S. market in November and go global in the months to follow.
